Résumé

One summer's evening, two men meet up in a Dublin restaurant. Old friends, now married and with grown-up children, their lives have taken seemingly similar paths. But Joe has a secret he has to tell Davy, and Davy a grief he wants to keep from Joe. Both are not the men they used to be. As two pints turns to three, then five, Davy and Joe set out on a journey to revisit the haunts of their youth.

Of course it's funny, it's a Roddy Doyle book.
Roddy Doyle is amazing. He can write a whole book that consists mostly of dialogue, and still manage to be intersting, funny, and touching. In this book, nothing happens. Two pals are talking, in a pub, in front of a guiness, the way they often do. They talk. That's it, the whole book: two people talking. And yet, it is so vivid you feel like you are in the pub with them, hearing them talk in their irish accents, laughing, telling stories, not remembering how many beer they've had. It is impossible to put down without hearing the whole conversation, and it's genius.
